SJCE COMPOSERS VOL. 1

Very excited to announce the first SJCE Composers record. I play clarinet on the album and it also features 2 takes of my Movement Exercise No. 1 for Blindfolded Ensemble.

NOTES ON THE PIECE
Movement Exercise No. 1 for Blindfolded Ensemble is the first in a series of etudes composed to heighten collective awareness and communication within a group. Each exercise form is written as a schematic and is memorized by players in the ensemble. The players are then blindfolded to improvise the content of the piece. Sections are cued through each member's direct contribution to the collective intention, without any visual or predetermined communication. By using the blindfolds to heighten sensory awareness, the ensemble conducts the piece and moves seamlessly through the form as a single organism, simply by collectively feeling each other's intentions.

The Seattle Jazz Composers Ensemble was in the studio this month, recording new works by a huge range of composers. One of the things that amazes me about this project is truly how much of the community it engages and reaches out to. I've never played in a jazz big band that incorporates so many different styles in the jazz canon - which is a direct result of cross-pollinating all of the different jazz scenes in Seattle and pulling them into one hell of a organism.

This is something to support for the long haul - and we need more ensembles like this!!
